Roads Scholar #4: Temporary Traffic Control for Local Agencies

This course is intended for engineers, technicians, inspectors, and maintenance personnel whose duties require an intermediate understanding of traffic control in work zones, including design, setup, and management of traffic controls. Based on Part 6 of the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, (MUTCD).

Topic areas include:
  • Fundamental Principles of Traffic Control
  • Elements of Temporary Traffic Control Zones
  • Worker and Road User Safety Considerations
  • Temporary Traffic Control Devices
  • Temporary Traffic Control Activities
  • Typical Applications for Local Agency Work
  • Traffic Control for Incident Management
  • Practical Exercises

One year of field experience is recommended, but not required for this course; however, completion of the LTAP Mini-Workshop “Basics of Work Zone Traffic Control with Flagger” is recommended in order to understand the concepts presented in this course. This course does not qualify as a required certification for contractors under DOTD rules.
